Big leaf maple is a large deciduous tree that grows in western North America. The wood is reddish-brown and is used in furniture, musical instruments and other products. Big Leaf Maple occasionally produces a burl.  Only one in a hundred trees will have the burl and the logs will only have a small section that has burl. This burl was a growth in which the grain was radically deformed because of some stress or damage and made small birdseye knots and swirly figure. This burl is treasured by musical instrument makers.

Box Elder is a fast growing tree that was often planted as a shade tree and for windbreaks. The wood is plain but sometimes Box Elder produces a burl in which the grain is radically deformed because of some stress or damage and makes small birdseye knots. This burl wood is highly figured.
